What Is Adrenal Fatigue?

Your adrenal glands sit atop your kidneys and are generally associated with your stress response — whether the stress is big or small. In today’s high-stress environment, however, that “little push” becomes a persistent bulldozer getting you through the day.

Your adrenal glands aren’t meant to handle that much production, and the result is adrenal fatigue. Adrenal fatigue is not just another way of saying “I’m tired.” It’s a genuine, serious syndrome in which your body can’t produce the cortisol that it needs. Your body no longer reacts to stress — you just feel tired and laggy all day long. This syndrome also inhibits your body’s ability to produce and balance other hormones such as DHEA, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. As a result your whole body suffers.

Adrenal fatigue is marked by an overwhelming fatigue that can’t be quenched by sleep. People suffering from this condition rely on coffee or other caffeine sources in the morning just to get started and continue to use them throughout the day.

While any one of these could be a result of regular old fatigue, if you have a number of these for a prolonged time and to a severe degree, you need to start taking better care of your adrenal glands. Your doctor may also be able to perform a saliva test to evaluate your cortisol levels. If they fluctuate drastically over a 24-hour period, then it is a sign of adrenal fatigue.

 What You Can Do

There is no magic pill to fix your adrenal glands. It takes work and determination to get your hormones and energy back to normal. Here are a few areas you can work on.

1. Nutrition

What you eat is vital to your adrenal function. Sugary snacks are going to spike your blood sugar levels, which will then cause your body to excrete excess cortisol, zapping you of more energy. Strive to eat well rounded and nutritious meals and snacks that are going to keep you balanced.

2. Lifestyle

Because stress is the main cause of this problem, do whatever you can to relieve it. Develop a routine of exercise that will calm you down after a stressful day. Also strive to get a full night’s sleep every night. Over time, being consistent in these two areas will help.

3. Reduce Stress

While sometimes it’s impossible to avoid it altogether, do your best to steer clear of stress. Avoid or change what you can, and manage what you can’t. Make a plan to reduce your stress over time, and stick with it. Also, developing relaxation techniques, such as breathing and meditation, can help.

4. Supplements
