Get Ready to Quit Smoking!

If you’ve decided to quit smoking, congratulations! You’ve made a great decision. If you stop smoking today, you’ll drastically lower your risk of the following diseases and conditions: stroke, heart attack, COPD, lung cancer, and infertility. What a huge health bonus!

Why do so many people suffer setbacks when they try to quit smoking? You guessed it… those nasty side effects. Withdrawal symptoms from nicotine are intense. Lets talk about the most common effects and how to deal with them so you don’t cave to the pressure.

Here are the most common symptoms that occur when a person puts down the butt for good:

  • Cravings: Cravings for cigarettes usually are most intense for the first week, but can linger for months after, depending on the person. How will you cope? Distraction is key. Be prepared with plans for activities to keep yourself occupied; go for a walk, try an activity with your hands. Writing, knitting, painting, playing billiards are all things to keep cigarette-less hands occupied.
  • Irritability: Let’s be honest. Withdrawal from nicotine will make you edgy.  Chances are you’ll contend with this symptom for a period of two weeks to a month. Try relaxation techniques like meditation, hot baths, listening to music. Avoid caffeine.
  • Fatigue: The change in your body’s chemistry may leave you exhausted. By all means, take it easy for the two weeks you’ll likely be dealing with fatigue. You deserve the break!
  • Hunger: It’s quite likely that you’ll deal with an increased appetite for a few weeks. Be sure to drink plenty of water, and munch on healthy snacks, like bite-size vegetable pieces, fresh fruit, and crunchy nuts.
